On Sunday 11th November the bells of St Swithuns rang out in remembrance of those from our villages who gave their lives in the 2 World Wars and in commemoration of 100 years since the end of the First World War.
Firstly they rang half muffled – an eerie sound (as per tradition on the occasion of the war memorial service). Then at 1230 the bells will were rung again joining with thousands of other bells ringing all over the country at the same time. This was part of the national marking of the end of the First World War.
Some more of Great Chishill bellringers rang the bells at Heydon for this too. In the evening the bells will rang again, this time at Great Chishill and Chrishall as part of the ‘Battles O’er’ Commemoration .
The gathering at the war memorial was the biggest that has been seen in the village for many years. The service was conducted by Rev Simon Hall from King’s College School, and the ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ bugle calls were performed by a young lady from the same school.
