Coronation – the villages celebrate

Although the weather was not very kind for the Coronation Weekend, there was a big turn out for the celebration events.

Starting on the Friday evening with a party in the grounds of the URC with live music from Mark Lafferty, a Scottish piper and Scottish Dancing in which villagers joined in.
On Saturday afternoon the St Swithun’s bellringers rang the bells in Heydon, Elmdon, Chrishall, Langley, Clavering and finally at Great Chishill before joining the packed pub for the Coronation Dinner.

Sunday saw another big turnout for the barrel rolling competition – beer barrels were rolled from the Chequers pub in Barley to the Pheasant, stopping at the windmill for a Tug-o-War between the two villages.

Monday was possibly the climax of the weekend when Great Chishill’s own Morris Dancing team – a team made up of villagers most of whom had not done anything like this before but have been practising since Christmas – gave a very impressive display in the road outside the Pheasant.
