2022 The BELL RESTORATION PROJECT The work begins

As soon as COVID restrictions were eased, fund raising events were re-started, with coffee mornings, a snowdrop walk, Village slide show, a Christmas tombola and a Ceilidh. A JustGiving site was set up which enabled Gift Aid to be easily added to donations. Local people were given the opportunity to having a brass memorial plaque fixed to the headstocks of the renovated bells.
On 12th January 2022, the clock people (James the Jewellers, Saffron Walden) moved in and disconnected the clock and its associated parts as the clock is located beneath the bell floor.
On 31st January the bell hangers arrived and the work of dismantling the bells started, helped by a team of 5 local volunteers.

All 5 bells and their fittings were removed from the frame and lowered to the ring floor level using blocks and tackle, then finally to the floor of the church by means of a special 'spider crane'.

The bells were taken away to Appleton and the builders moved in. The ancient (believed to be older than the oldest bells) frame was strengthened, steel joist were put in beneath the frame to stop the frame from moving in the tower, and a new steel structure was created to mount the new bell.
